Broken Social Scene w/Emily Haines

The Broken Social Scene bunch really are fantastic. They’re just a gift that keeps on giving. They need no introduction,¬†everyone knows who Broken Social Scene are. They played a couple of shows in Toronto this past Thursday and Friday. Emily Haines has, in my opinion, the most beautiful voice ever. I like Metric, but I love Emily and the Soft Skeleton. It is well within my capabilities to write tens of thousands of words about how much I love Emily Haines and her solo record Knives Don’t Have Your Back, but I’ll leave it at that. Anyway, guess who made a guest appearance at the Friday BSS show? None other than Emily Haines. I think if I was there I would have fainted. Here they are doing the anthemic Anthems For A Seventeen Year Old Girl.

God, I’d kill to see BSS with Emily Haines. Emily was a surprise special guest at their show at the Koko last year, and she sang on Anthems. I wasn’t there, having opted for the LAME and INCREDIBLY DISAPPOINTING Scala show a month before which consisted of 70% Kevin Drew’s aimless drunken rambling, 20% solo material and about 2 actual BSS songs. Needless to say, I was a bit upset…

So good in Leeds back in 2006 though. 12 musicians; Anthems, Ibi Dreams, Lover Spit and Major Label Debut (Fast) all in a row…and I got hugged by Kevin Drew! You should definitely check them out next time they’re over, but be warned- they are the most frustratingly inconsistent live band on God’s earth, dementedly see-sawing between the sublime and the teeth-grindingly pretentious with gleeful abandon.

    Good video too :-)
