Psapp @ Arnold Circus Bandstand

I went to see Psapp play at Arnold Circus Bandstand today. I left early and had a look around Brick Lane Market and stopped in a cafe and got some bacon and OJ (mmm).

On the way there it was raining and windy and truly disgusting. By the time I had got to the bandstand my shoes were wet and I was just about ready to keel over and die of hypothermia. I saw a couple of people in the bandstand and concluded I was at the right place at the right time, and took a seat on a bench. A couple of the guys came over and spoke to me, they were nice and friendly. They said they were still waiting for the band to arrive, which is why they hadn’t started yet. I talked with one of the guys for a while, he mentioned that there’s talk of the Northampton Square Bandstand being demolished. I really hope this doesn’t happen, there’s no point in getting rid of it- what else¬†could they put there? I think it’s also a nice feature for the university and the residents in the nearby streets. We agreed that Bandstand Busking would be much better in the summer, and he said that in the future¬†they’re going to try and do busks with multiple bands on a Sunday each month. Exciting stuff. The band finally turned up and got started. They were interesting to watch; they had an array of weird instruments. One guy was shaking a bunch of bones attatched to some string, and a girl had what looked like a fish with some bells strapped to it. They played the first song twice because they went wrong the first time, then the played 2 more songs. Random homeless looking people kept coming up and having a peek at what was going on. It was good for a free show, I’m excited about the busks next week. I’m also quite intrigued about Psapp and would like to see one of their shows next time they play in London.

I think it’s really great what Bandstand Busking do, keep an eye on their website and turn up for some busks.

    Hi Anika,

Thanks for coming along and braving the elements today and for writing such nice things about the busks. It was good to get something a little different under a bandstand and you should see Psaap and their boneaphone in all its glory on the site in the coming weeks.

We were told they’re trying to knock down the Arnold Circus bandstand too which would be a huge shame.

Hopefully see you next week again.

That’s a very cool thing they’ve got going there. It’s always nice to see bands stripped down and not on stage. I don’t recall seeing many/any bandstands around Australia – but it would be something great to get started, “sidewalk busking” maybe due to the lack of bandstands? :P
