Review: Volcano! @ Pure Groove

I love Pure Groove. Ever since I moved here I’ve been taking full advantage of all the instore gigs they offer. It’s 10 minutes down the road, the staff are friendly, and most importantly, the instores are free. Perfect. I feel kind of guilty about always being in their shop and only occasionally buying anything, so today I decided to buy a Pure Groove tote bag for the nifty little price of £5. I also picked up a copy of the Stool Pigeon with Paul McCartney gracing the front cover.

So on to Volcano!. They’re a 3 piece from Chicago and they play an experimental style of rock. They were fun to watch; the drummer looked as though he was possessed, the keyboardist had alot of technical looking equiptment, and the singer was getting really into it with his falsetto vocals. The band were instrumentally tight and coherent despite the fact that if you divided the songs up into individual parts I would struggle to see how they would fit together, but they do, and it sounded good. I don’t really listen to the type of music Volcano! makes, so I can’t come up with any informed comparissons to other bands. The band have a 7″ out called Africa Just Wants To Have Fun which is actually quite catchy. The band are playing tonight at the Hoxton Bar and Kitchen and have a few more UK dates lined up.

I don’t blame you, I would hibernate if I could! The band didn’t play for that long so you didn’t miss toooo much. I’m looking forward to Chairlift tomorrow though :D
