Interview: Simone White

Simone White

This is Simone White, she plays wonderful folky finger-picked songs and sings beautifully. Simone is currently based in California but has lived and played all over the place. Her full length record I Am The Man was released in 2007 on Honest Jon’s. It’s a beautiful record. Lovely, heartfelt lyrics, beautiful guitar; Simone has a stunning voice… it’s a fantastic record from start to finish. My personal favourite is Why Is Your Raincoat Always Crying? It’s catchy, the lyrics are clever and sweet, and it has a pretty cool music video (featuring lots of costume changes and a cute kitten!).

Check her myspace to hear a fantastic cover of the old Elizabeth Cotten song Freight Train. I love that song and it’s ability to cement itself in my head for days every time I hear it. Here are ten questions.

What was your first musical instrument and where did you get it?

piano, age 9. my step-mother was a concert pianist, she taught me classical piano. I wish I’d learned the blues and honky tonk. I probably would have stuck with it.

Do you download music or buy hard copies? Or both?

hard copies still, I know, that’s ancient. I usually trade in cds at Amoeba. but I hardly listen to music at home, usually in the car, and I’m not in the car much. I’m crap with music these days. I’d rather just listen to nothing.

Favourite music venue to play and why?

Pete’s Candy Store in Brooklyn, it’s long and skinny like a train car, there’s a tiny stage with bare light bulbs arched over, the bar is separate, people really sit quietly listening, at little tables that line the wall and sitting on the floor. it’s timeless.

Last book read:

After the Quake, Haruki Murakami

Last movie watched:

The Wrestler, it destroyed me.

Current favourite thing on TV:

don’t watch tv ever

Best moment on tour?

The shows I did in Germany were amazing. The audiences were so responsive. The promoters there really take care of you, feed you, put you up in a hotel. In Frankfurt they wouldn’t stop clapping. I had to keep going back out til I had no songs left. It feels so nice to be lauded. I play shows in LA and one person is there, usually my friend that came with me in my car.

If you could play anywhere in the world, where would it be?

Small towns in far off places. Anywhere where the sound is good and people want to listen.

Favourite band/singer/album you discovered recently?

Toumani Diabaté, The Mandé Variations. it’s very soothing and beautiful.

If you could get any two musicians to collaborate with each other, who would they be and why?

I’d like to get my musician friends Victoria Williams and Thao (with the Get Down Stay Down) together. They’re both crazy hootenany women and they need to meet and we will jam and holler in three part appalachian harmony

Thanks to Simone for doing the questions. Keep an eye on her Myspace and you can hear lots of songs on Last FM. Here is the music video for the brilliant

Lovely. Didn’t know she visited Frankfurt, dammit. Just 45 minutes (with tailwind) by car from my hometown.

Thanks for the interview! I love her music and have been appreciating her creativity for some time now. It’s interesting to watch an artist emerge, then grow and change. Simone just keeps becoming more heartfelt and relevant with each new album!

  1. New Simone White record « Anika In London - January 15, 2009

[...] I really like Simone White, she’s got a beautiful voice and lots of great songs, so I’m very very excited about her next record. It’s out on Honest Jon’s in June. She just posted a new song called You Are Loved on her myspace, it’s really sweet and beautiful. You can find out a little more about the record in this blog she posted. You can listen to her songs on her Myspace. I also suggest listening to her Freight Train cover because it’s perfect. She’s got a show in New York with Sharon Van Etten at the end of January in New York which will probably be super amazing so if you are in New York or have a few hundred pounds spare and fancy a trip across the ocean I’d recommend going to the show. After that she’s got one in LA then comes over to Europe and is playing in Madrid and Zurich and some other places in mainland Europe. Hopefully she’ll come to London while she’s over in this general direction. She answered some questions for the blog a little while ago which you can read here. [...]
