Review: Wales Uber Alles at The Lexington

A mini festival of Welsh bands. Sounded good to me. I got to the pub and they were late letting people upstairs, so this girl picked up a guitar and started playing. I will make a separate post on that because it was awesome.

Silver Gospel Runners: A fun twee band with a trumpet and some triangle. They were fun and quite enjoyable, listen on Myspace.

Frederick Stanley Star: This band were BRILLIANT. We knew they would be good when we saw they were setting up with a double bass and a banjo. And one of the band members had bowling shoes on, a mustache, and a squeeky voice. He was the best. They played crazy, uptempo folk with group vocals and a heap of added fun. At the end of the set the singer donned a bike helmet and the drummer proceeded to drum on her head. They reminded me a bit of Port O’Brien. They were probably my favourite band of the night, listen to them on Myspace and definately catch them live if you can.

The next band were an epic fail and tried to kill me with their generic, straight ahead, guitar + bass + drums – creativity formula. Oh, that is quite possibly the meanest thing I have written in my blog, I feel a bit bad. I feel mean now, so I will just say that they were clearly not for me, but some people in the audience seemed to be loving them and they themselves seemed to be having fun. The next band weren’t for me either. They all looked bored and I got bored too.

The Joy Formidable: They were brilliant again. Ritzy flails about the stage and sings with so much gusto, it’s very enjoyable to watch and hear. They seemingly didn’t play for very long, but I don’t have a watch so I have no idea how long they actually played. I think it’s a sign of a good band when their set goes by so fast and you never look at the clock. Listen on Myspace and go see them live.
