Review: Sharon Van Etten at Rough Trade

I was so excited for this. This week I saw a ton of shows: Scott Matthew, Kimya Dawson, Metric, Ane Brun, Akron/Family…. but I was most excited about seeing Sharon play at Rough Trade.

After a brief taster of her performance at Beirut from 736763892386432 miles away from the stage, I was excited to finally hear her beautiful voice at a closer distance. Instead of playing on the stage she took a chair and played over in the sofa area. I love that sofa area, I have probably spent a few hours lounging about there this year. I call that green chair in the photo the Mastermind, because when you sit in it you look about 10 times more intelligent than you did previously.

I was record browsing over at the end of the shop with a friend and we heard some guitar strums and headed over. Sharon was just playing with her voice un-amplified. It was beautiful. She was super excited to have her first ‘proper’ album, and she played us a few songs from it. She played For You which was also on her home recordings cd. It’s my favourite, and for her performance she was joined by Great Lake Swimmers’ Julie and Erik. Julie did some singing and Erik accompanied her on banjo. It was lovely.

It was such a treat to finally meet Sharon. Yay. Listen to her beautiful music.
