Review: Yann Tiersen at The Electric Ballroom

I had a 3 hours maths exam 6-9pm. I was done in an hour and a half but didn’t want to be the first person to leave. Finally I made my escape and got the tube up to Camden. I listened to Wildbirds on the way but I couldn’t help but feel kind of terrible. Being a fail is no fun.

I went into the venue and they took away my water, which frustrated me because now I have to buy a new water bottle. The place was pretty busy and chattery, it was in the interlude before Yann’s set. I tried to find somewhere to stand. Electric Ballroom is actually pretty big. I went upstairs but couldn’t see anything. I eventually just stood at a spot at the back by the sound deck. I couldn’t see and I constantly had people pushing past. Bobbles was at the front but I don’t like pushing through people, so I made do at the back. I surveyed the lights for the first few songs, they were ok but not great. The stage looked pretty high too.

Yann and band were much more ‘rock’ than I thought they would be, I was not so charmed. The sound from where I was standing was murky, and it was chattery. There was also some guy who was acting more like the leader of the band than Yann. I stayed for about 40 minutes, but I kept getting the overwhelming feeling of ‘I’d rather be listening to [insert band] right now‘. I couldn’t see what was going on and the sound didn’t capture me, so I headed home. I think I was just, for once, not in the mood for a show. And Bobbles says Monochrome wasn’t on the setlist, and that’s my favourite, so I’m not too upset. Ho hum.

How can you have an exam that late? That’s insane! Also, a little tip from an insider: take your jacket off before you go inside and put the water bottle in your sleeve. Then wear jacket casually under arm. Works EVERYWHERE, I am the water bottle hiding master! Let’s keep this between us though.

Hahaha, I’m sure you’ve got the technique mastered.

And yeah I know, 6-9 for an exam is ridiculous.
