Review: Chimes & Bells + Here We Go Magic at the ICA

Chimes & Bells are a band you have to check out. I caught them on Saturday, and it was with pleasure that I watched them play again on Monday. The Bella Union band are no less than brilliant.

Their songs are epic, an instrumental delight. Thumping kick drum and layered vocals, there’s a real atmospheric quality to their sound. Singer Caecilie Trier has a powerful, low drawl, which reminded me of Mariam/Wildbirds & Peacedrums. It was almost as if she might bust out into Places at any moment.

Here We Go Magic were next, I was pretty excited to see them after they accidentally missed their show on the Bella Union stage on Saturday. I really love their band name too, bonus points right there. After drummer Peter (Pee-ter) returned from going to pee the band launched into their set. They were very good indeed, but mostly I just loved Fangela. It’s a brilliant song and you should seek it out. Go go go! After HWGM I made a dash, I’ve seen both My Latest Novel and Sleeping States before. I’m sure it would have been fun, but I needed to get back early. Nonetheless, another fantastic night courtesy of the lovely Bella Union. What a brilliant record label.

Shame you left before MLN- they were easily the highlight of the gig for me. Chimes & Bells were okay, but pale in comparison to Choir Of Young Believers.

really? I’ve seen COYB twice and thought they were brilliant but I much, much preferred C&B.

I don’t like her deep voice as much as you- it sounds better when she sings as back up to COYB or Jong Pang (although maybe it’s another female that sings there, but she does the cello also). Maybe C&B will grow on me when I get a chance to listen to a cd of theirs, but I’m not too sure. COYB’s ep and album on the otherhand are just perfect from start to finish.
