Review: July Bandstand Busking

I completely forgot I went to this until just now. I think my memory of the weekend was wiped and seemingly all I can think about is how ace St. Vincent performing Marrow was. I always go to say Scary Mansion instead of St. Vincent. I get them mixed up, I think it’s because I’m so used to constantly gushing about Scary Mansion. When I was talking to Annie I mentioned I was in Paris for Scary Mansion and she said ‘oh, was it that Ladyfest?’ I was like ‘uhhh yeah. But the only band I liked was St. Vin… [then I realised that I was talking to St. Vincent and I meant to say Scary Mansion] …oh wait, that’s you.’ She laughed and said it was a good answer. Ah, St. Vincent. And Scary Mansion.

Ok, I have gone off on a completely un-busk-related tangent. So, before I saw St. Vincent I went to catch the July edition of Bandstand Busking. It was as fun as ever to meet up with Team Bandstand Busking and see so many friends and get to eat ice cream, and free music too, of course. Great combo.

Internet Forever were first. They were poppy and I really enjoyed watching them play a few songs. Lulu and the Lampshades were next, I’ve seen them a few times before and I really think they are a fantastic band. Melodic, upbeat pop songs with ukulele and pretty harmonies. I can’t wait for the videos to be online. They did a really fun song which involved some wizardry of the hands, and some cups. Intriguing? Yes. Wait until you see the videos.

Hockey ‘headlined’ the whole thing and were brilliant. I’d seen them before at Pure Groove and it was a pleasure to hear them again. The songs were completely stripped back and the singer’s voice really shined in that context. He has a seriously powerful voice and the first couple of songs, Work and Too Fake are good, catchy pop songs. There is a good video of Work here. The Bandstand Busking videos will be amazing.

Check out Hockey, Internet Forever and Lulu and the Lampshades. Don’t forget to pay Bandstand Busking a visit and come along to the August busk.
