Review: Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head at Flowerpot

I have to admit, I wasn’t expecting all that much from this show. I figured alot of the hype surrounding them was based largely on their spectacularly odd band name. I thought that they’d be fun, but I wouldn’t have gone if it wasn’t free. Alas, it was super duper fun and it was well worth going.

The band played a really strong set, maintaining energy throughout. It was basically really synthy, upbeat pop music, with alot of falsetto vocals… it wasn’t all too dissimilar to CSS (NPSH + CSS – now THAT would be a fun show). It wasn’t just the singer giving it his all, the whole band were having fun and it was a great set. It was the band’s first show outside of North America and I would recommend catching them live… if only for lyrical gems like these:

“Look at my facial hair!”

“Oh man, hot damn, it’s everywhere! Where’d you get that beard?”

“I grew it!”

“How’d you keep it so clean?”

“Shampoo it!”

Brilliant. The back and forth vocals were super fun and, while it’s not the type of thing I would listen to, I’d be more than happy to see them again live. Go see them if you get the chance! Listen to that Beard Song on their Myspace.

You can also check out my Au revoir pics too.

I think I’ll head back to see NPSH at the Garage on Friday rather than Yo Yo tonight.
They’re on at the Garage at 11pm.

Nice photos, Lorne! Especially those ARS ones, I really struggled with that show, but your shots are brilliant!
