Review: Beach House at Heaven

Beach House! I’m not particularly articulate, especially when I’m excited, so there aren’t really words to express how great a band I think Beach House are.

I’ve seen Beach House perform these songs quite a few times now, but I’m not in the slightest bit tired of it. Every single song is pure magic, so it’s just song after song of heart-meltingly wonderful stuff. Not a single lag in the set- it was just a constant, consistent onslaught of gold. Every song! Every album they’ve done is brilliant.

I thoroughly enjoyed this show, in particular it was a treat to hear their new song, which sounded incredible and I can’t wait to hear it again. They did an extended intro to ‘Heart of Chambers’, where it was just that opening note rumbling for a good 20 seconds before the song started. It almost made me cry; it was just so brilliant, and that’s such a special song to me. One of my favourites, for sure. The noise just completely washed over me and I would have happily stood there and listened to them play every single song in their back catalogue five times over.

Another treat came in the form of ‘Astronaut’ from ‘Devotion’, which I guess I haven’t heard them play in about a year. I love that song so much- what a joy to hear it! ‘Master of None’ was as brilliant as ever, as were all the ‘Teen Dream’ songs. They sent us off with ‘Take Care’. There are no words to describe the wonder of that song. It’s so incredibly swoon-worthy it’s untrue. It makes me involintarily clutch at my heart and go ‘awwww!’. The choruses are so huge and perfect. The song is completely perfect.

Victoria’s voice is amazing. The drums are so wonderful, as is everything Alex does. Beach House are a real favourite of mine.

Listen to them and love them- Beach House! Their Shepherd’s Bush Empire show WILL sell out.

White Hinterland opened and they were great again. I love their record and they’re fun live- I’d love to see them again.

Take Care

I’ll take CARE of you! If you ASK me to! In a YEAR or two! Ooooo.

Yes, it has been proven by the laws of the Universe that Beach House make some of the most swoon-worthy music possible. This song just kills me! It makes me clutch at my heart as if I am about to faint.! I don’t even have any control over that, the song just WILLS it to happen; and it does. It’s the perfect end to a brilliant album.

Something about the song just exudes youth and warmth. It really captures a feeling. This is a song that goes straight to your heart. Every chord change, and the big choruses… they’re perfect. I love it. Such a great song.

‘Teen Dream’ is probably my (tied) favourite album from this year, and I can tell that it’s one that I’ll just love more and more over time- like the first two Beach House records. I love how they can do that. Some bands you listen to and listen to and then you get tired, but not Beach House. I remember when I had the realisation that they were amazing, a couple of years ago, late at night. And I’ve loved them a whole lot ever since.

I suddenly am ridiculously excited to see them again. June 1st at Heaven. Come come come. Buy the album, get the song, listen to it hundreds of times. I know I will. I love this band, the music they make is so wonderful. Thanks, Beach House.

Record Store Day 2010

Record Store day 2010 looms near, a mere month and a day away- April 17th. Last year was very lovely thanks to free shows put on by Rough Trade, and Pure Groove did the same. I’m looking forward to seeing what they have up their sleeves for this year. So far, Rough Trade East have Laurie Anderson playing and more TBC, and Rough Trade West has Jesca Hoop and Peggy Sue performing…

Along with the free instores various special releases are planned for independent record shops here in London and worldwide, also.

I am most excited for Beach House‘s Zebra 12″. It’ll have two original songs on it- The Arrangement and Baby. The Arrangement is really great and reminds me of a more chill Mates of State song.

You can hear it here.

Review: Beach House at Roundhouse

After a debacle with tickets I finally managed to get into the show. I fought my way into the downstairs standing area, leaving a wake of crippled security people*. I got right to the front and was pretty excited to be watching Beach House. Shows are so expensive, I usually get tickets in exchange for doing photos. This was the first show in a very, very long time that I bought a ticket AND left my camera at home. Under normal circumstances I probably would have been sad to be without my camera, but I knew Beach House would play in the dark, and I’ve shot them lots of times before… so I wasn’t too upset.

Anyway. It felt pretty lovely to just be watching a gig (and to just have a tote bag instead of a backpack of camera gear!).

I love Beach House, this was the fifth time I’d seen them live. ¬†They mostly played songs from Teen Dream, opening with Walk In The Park. Norway was brilliant and the drums sounded wonderful in 10 Mile Stereo; hearing the songs at a louder volume was brilliant. The only Devotion song they played was Gila. Set highlight for me was Master of None. The middle part of the song where Victoria sings ‘Jack of all trades, master of none, cry all the time cos I’m not having FUNNNNN‘ was so epic, Victoria’s voice was completely engulfing.

The band finished their set with album closer Take Care. It’s one of my favourite songs of the year, the song builds and builds and the choruses are strong and triumphant; Victoria sings with so much gusto… it’s perfect. It was great to see Beach House again.

Grizzly Bear were the headline band. I have to say, I’m seemingly one of the few people who don’t love them. Parts of their set were really nice and they seemed to be enjoying playing (particularly on the songs they did with Victoria). Knife sounded wonderful live. I’ve been told a few times that you need to listen to Grizzly Bear loads and then they will just ‘click’ with you. It’s yet to happen for me…

Beach House are brilliant. Check out their latest record if you haven’t yet, and the first two before it are also amazing.

*this is a complete lie. I am weedy and can only fight old ladies or children.
